Total insanity circuit-bending keyboard (YAMAHA PSR-185)

Short video where basically it thinks I’m pressing very random things, very quickly. Made it because I think my previous circuit-bending vids have been too long and boring. Hope it livens things up. =D Seems I’m sending the main clock pulses (which are VERY fast) into the part of the keyboard which deals with detecting presses of buttons and keys.

  2. 0:16 Sounded more like Luigi’s Mansion, when the Music speeds up as you’re sucking the Ghosts out of the Room you’re in.

  6. I never did own this keyboard, but it was very popular and I liked it a lot until I looked at newer yamaha and casio’s older CTK-411 released in 1998.

  8. Yeah it does at the beginning. Then it sounds a lot different.

  12. i have the very same keyboard! so cool… mine hasn’t glitched up like that though, i hope it doesn’t anytime soon. i plan on making a million dollars with it lol. the sounds coming out of that thing of yours is sick! i just wish there was a way to transfer sound to the computer without any low quality shakes, i mean the instrument is a little outdated compared to the new keyboards out there. it will always be a classic though.

  18. …Well, that was nice and constructive.
What a nice message you’re portraying of our country too. <_<
    (Learn English too…)

If you have seen how boring my other circuit-bending vids are, you’d understand why I did this rubbish in an attempt to lighten it up.

  22. Maybe I’ll put a vid of that up soon. :P
So I can’t add switches to the sound chip because if you just move your hand near the switch then it will cut out. T_T I failed…

  24. No. I was going to, actually, but the pins on the sound chip are very close to each other, making it tricky. Since I found out about the glitched-drums mod, I accidentally made the thing ‘permanently’ circuit-bent (you can see that on another of my vids).
Now the sound chip has become ‘over-sensitive’ – even when the cover is on, if you just so much as move your hand near the back of the keyboard and it buzzes and cuts out eventually.

  26. Hewy I have the same keyboard
Have you added any actual buttons yet?
Preferably to glitch up the drums?

  27. SomethingUnreal on Sat, 18th Apr 2009 5:08 pm
  28. Yes, I understand you fine. =)
Well although it seems I spent a long time circuit-bending it (with all the vids), it was only really a few days.
I have also played around with a little toy computer, if you check out the ‘PROPERLY circuit-bent’ video, it’s okay. Not complex though, just hit the modded button during sounds for some craziness. It’s not a long vid though, I might upload a longer one. It doesn’t show off all of the different sounds.

  30. No, you couldn’t :) . One question more – don’t you have anything else to play with, so you’re using an old keyboard’s sound chip? Oh, I hope you can understand me, because I’m not British.

  31. SomethingUnreal on Sat, 18th Apr 2009 5:08 pm
  32. Haha! Yes, I suppose I could, and thanks. But would I have to put a crack in it and place it somewhere where people could trip over it?

  33. Frankzvpl on Sat, 18th Apr 2009 5:08 pm
  34. You can always call yourself a modern artist. Good video.
