Touhou ‘Imperishable Night’ – MIDI out to Yamaha PSR-E313

Demonstration of Imperishable Night set to MIDI music in the Options, playing through my Yamaha keyboard. The keyboard’s display lets you see the notes as they’re played (the notes on Channel 1 of the MIDI, so sometimes nothing shows up). I’m having trouble getting it to set up the channels properly, ie what should be PERCUSSION comes out as PIANO. That is, until I start playing a MIDI file on the keyboard itself – at that point, it sets up its channels properly. That means it’s restricted …

  2. There are videos on yamaha musicsoft (also here on youtube) that shows you how to connect your keyboard and computer either thorugh your midi ports or usb to host port…either way your keyboard probably should have either one of these ports as a means of communicating with an external device

  8. where do you purchase midi cables?

and how much do they cost?

  9. TaisakuSangeki on Fri, 3rd Apr 2009 7:35 pm
  10. If you have a MIDI Cable, connect it to a computer, then you can Press the function button till you find “MIDI IN” if you play an mp3 then press play it will play through your piano… i think

  14. I would assume all you need to do is have a sound card with midi out on a breakout box or front panel, then set your midi music playback to be the keyboard and not your sound card. I don’t think this has much to do with it being a Yamaha or anything, it just needs a midi input. This is just a guess, as I don’t have the cable, nor do I have the space for my Audigy 2 in this computer :)

  16. Thanks for the response. yeah if there was a link to Yamaha where I could get some information that would be cool to. keep on experimenting. KA

  18. I’d love to tell you, but this “leader in online video” which is YouTube won’t even let me post it in a comment on my own video, even after I altered the text many times. I’ll edit the video description, adding the info there instead.

  24. Hm… I never actually tried playing with MIDI on my keyboard, but if Touhou plays on in…. oh yes. :D

    Yamaha FTW!

  28. Thanks for the info! =)
I’m pretty sure the MIDIs actually contain data specific to the game too (which only the game uses). For example, info on the loop points of track 16.

  30. I noticed after getting the midis that they do seem a slight different in respect to track setup. I noticed that the drum trak for some of the in game midis sends a change message which makes my keyboard default to voice drums, though the midis themselves don’t do that. I also noticed that the game doesn’t send the GM reset command which basically sets all instrumenst to 000 Grand Piano, or Drumkit1 on track 10 before sending new commands which may cause issues as well, so it may be the game :\

  32. Thanks. Yes, it is GM-compatible. However, it has no specific setting to enable this – it just always does whatever commands it gets via MIDI-in, e.g. with most MIDI files, the instruments are set up automatically at the start and it’s all okay. It’s only the MIDI-output of these Touhou games where the instruments fail to be set. (When I downloaded ‘ripped’/extracted MIDIs from the games and played them on a media player, using MIDI-out to this keyboard, I don’t think it has any problem.)

  34. Not sure if you got the keyboard setup figured out yet or not but, is your keyboard a General Midi capable one? If so on some you have to set General Midi to on for it to set properly, I know i do on my keyboard. Well anyway hope i helped somewhat.

  42. Not on my site – another site I found, here:
    mirsoft [dot] info.
In its search box, ‘imperishable night’ should be enough to bring up the archive of IN MIDIs.

  44. By SMW hack, I ment a hack of super mario world.
Research Lunar Magic and smw hacking for more info.
Sorry for only using initials.I will check out your site for IN midi’s since I love IN(The time limit pisses me off though)

  45. SomethingUnreal on Fri, 3rd Apr 2009 7:35 pm
  46. No, apart from simply recording your computer’s MIDI output by physically connecting it to the MIDI input. If you check the site I mentioned in my previous comment to angel199x, you can find the extracted MIDIs of IN, EoSD and PCB, but I think not SMW (Super Marisa World?). I’m not sure though, and I don’t have SMW, so I’m not sure if it even has MIDI music and if that’s even what you want. x_X

  47. Lishy1 on Fri, 3rd Apr 2009 7:35 pm
  48. Do you actually know how I can export the midi’s?I want to use them in my SMW hack.

  49. SomethingUnreal on Fri, 3rd Apr 2009 7:35 pm
  50. Better still, I found probably better than I could do, here:
    mirsoft [dot] info.
If you use their Search feature, you can get the MIDIs from Imperishable Night, PCB and EoSD. =D
They’re ‘direct rips’ (i.e. not fan-made, but straight from the game).
